What is Trauma-Focused CBT?
Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT) is a specialized form of therapy designed to help children and adolescents who have experienced trauma. This evidence-based approach combines cognitive-behavioural techniques with trauma-sensitive interventions. The therapy aims to address the emotional and psychological impact of traumatic events, helping the child process and reframe their experience. TF-CBT involves the child and their parent or caregiver, ensuring the healing process is comprehensive and supportive.
How Does Trauma-Focused CBT Work?
TF-CBT involves several key components, including psychoeducation, stress management skills, and trauma narrative development. The child works on understanding and managing the distressing symptoms of trauma, such as flashbacks, anxiety, and depression. Through narrative therapy, they can safely revisit and reframe the traumatic event, reducing its emotional grip on their life.
Parents or caregivers are also actively involved in TF-CBT. They learn to understand the child’s experience, which fosters empathy and effective support at home. Additionally, they work on their own emotional responses, addressing feelings of guilt, helplessness, or distress that may arise from their child’s trauma.
