What is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a therapeutic approach developed to help individuals process and overcome traumatic memories. Think of it like this: just as your body knows how to heal a cut, your brain has the ability to heal emotional wounds when it's not impeded. EMDR works by overcoming the blocks preventing your brain from properly processing distressing memories.
How EMDR Works
During EMDR therapy, a trained therapist guides you through a series of controlled eye movements while you focus on distressing memories. This technique helps the brain reprocess the traumatic event, transforming the way the memory is stored and experienced. It's not about erasing the memory but rather about reducing the intense emotional reactions associated with it.
