Hello, my name is Katrina Southernwood. I am the daughter of Mathias Kuntz and Sheila Michon, and the granddaughter of Kasper Kuntz and Elizabeth Jordan, Albert Michon, and Marie Verger. Most of those listed have joined the ancestors, including my recently deceased husband, and I honour that I am still grieving the loss of my partner.
Kasper was of German descent. The story I grew up hearing is that his family were Germans living in Russia. When the Bolshevik Revolution occurred, Kasper’s grandparents smuggled their children to the United States—a crime for which they were executed. I believe my grandfather Kasper was born in the United States and later emigrated to Canada, where he met Elizabeth Jordan. Elizabeth was orphaned as an infant after her parents were killed in a runaway buggy accident. She was adopted and raised by the Jordan family.
Marie Verger, my other grandmother, was born in Saskatchewan to French-born parents, Marie and Joseph Verger. I had the privilege of knowing both of my great-grandparents, as did my children. Marie’s first language was French, and she survived polio as a child despite being told she would never walk again. Marie was one of the strongest people I have ever known; she learned to walk again and was my rock growing up. She later met and married Albert Michon.
In 2019, I attended a culture camp where I was given my spirit name—Spotted Horse Tail Woman. During that time, I was also encouraged by an Elder to dig deeper into my family’s history. The Elder shared that the grandfathers told him I was one of the lost Indigenous children. This prompted me to call my mother, who revealed that after my grandfather passed away, it was discovered he was adopted as an infant. The stories we uncovered led us to believe he was from Fort Williams First Nation, but the adoption and its details were kept so secret that most of the documentation has been lost. Our family is still working to find the link and confirm this story.
Since then, I have been learning the teachings and ceremonies from Elders, and I am currently connected to Elder Sharon Yuzicappi from Standing Buffalo First Nation. She is guiding me in understanding traditional teachings and the importance of ceremony and prayer. Although I still feel lost at times, I also feel a strong pull—the drums are calling me home. I am still learning who I am and my place in my community.
I earned my Master’s degree in Indigenous Social Work from the University of Victoria, and since then, I have been working on my clinical skills, currently pursuing certifications in both Play Therapy and EMDR. I offer sessions in a variety of modalities, including play therapy, EMDR, CBT, DBT, Trauma-Focused CBT, and Client-Centered Talk Therapy. I am equipped to work with a variety of client issues, such as ADHD executive functioning, anxiety, depression, trauma processing, PTSD, anger, self-harm, and inter-generational trauma, among others.
